Closing Line
Guide meridians are closed against standard parallels as a device to avoid the extreme effect of convergence on the breadth of sections. Township and section lines are closed on standard parallels as part of the same plan. Both township and section lines are closed on standard parallels as part of the same plan. Both township and section lines may be made closing lines to maintain rectangularity. A different type of closing line occurs where the lines of the rectangular system of survey cross or close on the boundaries of reservations or grants, State boundaries, or the lines of various kinds of claims. (BLM, 1973, paragraph 3-68).
